So You Think You Can Squat

I just saw a pair of excellent videos about squatting, both about how to squat and how to properly teach others to squat. Since there's been more coaching amongst the group and because, quite honestly, I'm still figuring out how the hell to coach as well, I thought that it would be good to post them here (credits go to EliteFTS).

  1. Thanks. The videos were quite helpful. What do think of box squats?

Also I remember that Rippetoe says to look slightly down while he says to look slightly up.

  2. I'm mixed on box squats. I don't find them that useful, but others do. As with many things, try it and see if it works.

Slightly down vs. slightly up is just details. The most important thing is to maintain a neutral spine and an upright chest. Whether your head is up or down doesn't make that much of a difference. You certainly don't want to hyperextend and look at the ceiling, though. That's just being silly...

  3. Q, Rip also encourages everyone to do low-bar while that video is teaching high-bar. So that might be part of the discrepancy. Trying to look up at the ceiling while doing low-bar will be massive hyperextension.

  4. Now that you mention it, they do place the bar curiously high on the trainee's back, especially considering that it's a bunch of powerlifters training him.

  5. Box squats I think are great for teaching the 'sit back' part of squatting. It's a lot more intuitive for a new person to sit back on this thing like you would onto a chair, just with a bar on your back. Then lower the box height, then remove it, and hopefully the form will stick. But once you've got that down, I'm not sure what else box squatting gives you.
