I'm still trying to find the right belt. I literally have no idea how it's "supposed" to fit. Frank's works ok but it digs into my hip and rib cage a lot. I used dee's small belt and it felt good, but my ego took a hit from Frank making fun of me. I used their belts on my 235 working sets. 245x4 @9.5ish was there, but on rep 3 I went down and hit the support bar which screwed me up, so I just gave it up.

Hah! Sorry. It was just really funny seeing a really tall guy wearing a tiny belt that is narrower than some suit belts that I've seen...
ReplyDeleteUsing a belt properly does take some getting used to. I'm not 100% sure if I'm doing it correctly either, but here are a few things I've picked up:
1. Tightness: A really tight belt hurts. You should be able to stick your finger (hand) between your belt and your torso when you're not braced.
2. Positioning: If the belt is hurting your hips, you may be wearing it too low. Try wearing the belt, bracing, and doing a few air squats. This will allow the belt to settle into the proper position. I'm not quite sure I understand the problem about the belt digging into your ribs. Your ribcage shouldn't be moving during the lift.
3. Bracing: It actually took me a while to learn how to poof out my abs properly. It isn't exactly a flexing of the abs. To me, it feels like I'm trying to make my belly explode. Learning how to do this made a huge difference in how the belt felt during the lift. You could try practicing in the mirror. I can easily gain an inch or two in waist-circumference if I'm bracing correctly.
There are probably a bunch of things I missed too, but those points helped me get used to my belt. Let me know if this helps.
It's probably because the distance between your hips and ribs is kind of small and Frank's belt is too wide. Dee's belt felt good because it's skinnier. I doubt its more complicated than that.
ReplyDeleteI'm not so sure. We checked that, and Brian's gap is no smaller than mine (it's roughly the same size on both of us). Do they sell 3" belts?
ReplyDeleteNo, it's even simpler that their explanations: you are too skinny, and there are bones popping out everywhere (ribs, hips, ...). You need to eat more.
ReplyDeleteThis is the belt I ordered:
