Kik - 10/05/09 - Intensity - Bench

Same train of thought as in squats: Priming myself for higher weights, staying away from annoying triples.

Today I came in slightly better rested, bodyweight 204, and I was looking forward to having people around who create some positive tension and controlled aggression. Gordon does a good job as a teddy bear for small children, and I could also imagine him playing a major roll as a mediator for peace treaties; however, he is very much on the soft side of a whisper/hug to face-slap scale. Nate and Brian in turn, well... I can definitely see face slaps from those two in the near future.

Still Gordon was major part of my first bench PR today:

225x1 @8 (very fast)
255x1 @8 (still fast)
275x1 @8.5 (probably good for a triple, still fast)
/* activate Frank and Gordon */
295x1 @10 PR

Since 295 slipped out with a solid speed, I started flirting with 300 or 305. Nate (a semi-regular who lifts in jeans) decided for 305.

/* introduce Brian, Pat, and Jon to the equation, enhance pressure, add Nate to this, turn up the volume of voices */

305x1 @10.444 (awful grinder, took forever, Brian aged 13 years for being too concerned as a spotter)

Did some light shoulder work afterwards, and 2 sets of board presses (225x14/15) as trice assistance.

Finally a pay day!

  1. Haha, awesome posts. Keep writing, Rene! Nice PR as well.

And where's Danny? Haven't heard from him in forever...

  2. I totally do have aggression too, I just have to find it sometimes. I face-slap the guys from my house all the time!

  3. Nice work Rene. It's awesome that you hit 305 too. 290 looked really smooth.

I remember that a couple months ago, we weren't that far off on bench. If I can't hit 300+ this time around, I'd be curious to see what you've been up to (since you don't freaking post, slacker =).

  4. "positive tension and controlled aggression" -- did you call me? Congratulations on pressing 305. Nate made the right choice: when in doubt, go heavy. But seriously, did you consider switching to a "starting strength" squat? Why is the belt not making a significant difference? Where is the problem?
