More sporadic lifting

I could write something on how I'm going to start lifting again and stuff...but I'm not. So here is today.

Squat 225x5
245x5
265x5

Surprisingly heavy, no belt though, just going light. Will probably go for 295 or 315 next week. Just getting a feel for it.

Thick Bar Deadlifts: screwed around with 185-225-275 (I didn't really count)

I pinched 4 5kg plates last time with Justin, but this time I couldn't...oh well...

Pull -ups +25lbs x15

And that took 90min. weight is 190lbs. Looking to gain 10kilos this summer, although it may only be 5lbs. I'll talk more and comment more when I'm actually strong.

  1. How are you going to get strong without lifting weights regularly? Calisthenics will work for a while, but I think you're already past the point where doing that stuff will cause strength gains.

  3. I'm going to be doing cross-fit stuff, because its functional strength that fighters need.

All joking aside, I had written a paragraph on how lifting has helped my BJJ, but deleted it because I don't feel qualified to post it. I'm going back to my roots and love and will lift consistently 2x a week or 1x a week. Maybe I'll add 100lbs to my total this summer.

What I meant by saying "I'm not" is I'm not going to talk about lifting again, but I'm still going to do it. I just don't like talking about it because frankly (pun intended), I still don't feel like I'm strong enough to talk like I'm strong.

  4. Dude...chill out. The whole point of this blog is to give and receive criticism from others. Exactly how do you propose to do that if we have no idea what your training philosophy is? The fact of the matter is all of us can do a hell of a lot better. As long as you realize this and take criticism like a man, then you're "strong enough" to post here.

As far as you personally, exactly how many of us has even met you or seen what you do? It means a lot more when we see how hard someone is working rather than hearing about it in random/infrequent blog postings.
Dude, every time you post something I wonder why you even bother. No one here as any clue what you're doing or why. You think throwing out some raw number is gonna change that? Shit, I don't care if you can pull 585, if I don't know how you got there then there is no way for me to respect you.

Open up, keep your progress or lack thereof public...then we'll talk.

  5. Although I don't like the general tone, I do agree with Shanker on one thing: the purpose of this blog is not to show how strong you are, but rather to ...
    (1) electronically keep track of what you're doing (i.e., training log).
    (2) get / give advice or criticism from other lifters.
    (3) coordinate workouts, meets, and seafood buffets.

I'm also under general impression that you are contemplating between taking powerlifting as your main sport or just using it to supplement some other sport. For me this was never an issue (since I was never good at anything else), but for you it is. There is obviously time to experiment and see what works for you, but usually very little (physical) progress is made during such periods.

  6. I know who Aaron is. I'm the person who originally invited him onto the blog, after all. His schedule makes it difficult for him to lift with the rest of us.

However, I do agree with Danny and Shanker for the most part (except for Shanker's tone, though it's hard to measure that online...).

I wouldn't worry about being "expert" enough. When does that happen? When you total 1200? 1300? 1600? It's far more important to just get your thoughts out there. If they're wrong, then you'll find out. Nothing is lost.

And, honestly, though I guess I'm technically the "expert" on this blog (unless Danny or Nate stop by), I've been corrected fairly often about lots of things, so being the local expert is no guarantee that people will listen to you.

  7. Hi Aaron. Gotta say I think Shanker was out of line. We welcome traffic to the blog from anyone who cares enough about their lifting to post. Please continue. I'm not sure what all the drama in this thread came from ... maybe from the deleted post?

Anyway, everything posted on this blog is supposed to be constructive criticism. The only contribution I have at this point is strength training is all about consistency, and I feel like thats the main thing you should try to work on. If you can make it to Z at a time when the rest of us are lifting, we can be a lot more friendly and helpful.

  8. Yea...rereading this during daylight hours I realize I come across as an asshole. My bad. The point is simply this: None of us has any context for your training so we can't offer you criticism. Refusing to explain your methodology for whatever reason just doesn't make sense if you're going to post at all.

Also forget all this "strong enough" stuff. The reason I don't like that is when you say that you indirectly insult some of the other posters here who are not as strong as you but who at least value the community enough to be open about their training.

  9. Forgive me, my character is a work in progress. I might as well clarify my training now rather than later.

I like weight lifting (and eating) and I want to get stronger while training minimal martial arts (2x-4x a week). If I had to chose one, it would be lifting/strongman stuff. I would greatly like to go to meets with you guys, but both times I had a chance I wasn't prepared (i.e. hadn't lifted thanks to injury/BJJ).

Also, I'll be joining you guys Thursday. Its about time I lifted with you guys. 7pm right?

  10. Hell Yea. Actually, though its quite hard to tell from my post...I know Aaron and do respect his lifting (when he does with regularity) a great deal. I guess I just felt like you needed a kick in the ass, whether the tone was out of line or not. Hopefully you can filter through the external asshole and get at the crux of it, something I'm learning to do myself.

Hope to see you on Thursday.

  11. Also Aaron, no one is questioning your character here. If I gave you that impression I sincerely apologize.
If character is judged by the quality/tone of mitstrength posts I better get ready for a fiery afterlife.

  12. It was the attitude of only strong people should talk. Its cool Shanker, although the internet is serious business, I'm letting this one slide.
