Impressions of Z Center: Wendler 5/3/1 5 day (sort of...)
Very strange to be in a gym and being able to not only look out windows, but look down. Alot of weight dropping here, some on me.... Disagree with Shanker on the volume of announcements, but years of operating a bobcat, and small power tools for Grounds work has made me deaf. Felt very old.
Attempted to deadlift for first time. Thank you to Shanker who took time out of his workout to watch my form, and offer instruction. I was shocked at how hard Shanker trains, I felt very slothlike in comparison, of course I'm slothlike anyways...
Deadlift
150(?)X5
224X5
314X5
364X5
3X404X4X4X4
First rep of first set at 150 felt like I did everything right. My form as weight got heavier got sloppy. Apparently I have to concentrate on not moving my hips and stop rounding my back (both upper and lower.) Nice to try these for the first time though...
Barbell Rows
3X225X10X10X10
1X255X5
3X275X5X5X5
Oh, and Shanker. It was my fault the weight landed on me. Probably would have been a good idea to tell you I was spotting you...

Yes, if someone stands close behind me without my knowledge while I am doing squats, I would be a little concerned...
ReplyDeleteSafety bars are a good thing. I don't really see any need for spotters at the Z except if you're benching.
Oh, and 405x4x3 is freaky strong for your first day of pulling ever. How much do you weight?
ReplyDeleteAlso a note about notation. While I understand what your notation means, it's probably best to adopt standard notation, which is usually one of the following:
Reps x Weight
Weight x Reps x Sets
Sets x Reps @ Weight
The second one is the most widely used, but feel free to pick whichever one suits your fancy.
Frank: You are "spot on" in your comments (weak attempt at humor I know...) It was strange, first time in a gym in a long time, alot of people, and new lifts. It was actually overwhelming. We never used safety racks, or dropped weights. It just wasn't done. I reverted to form and attempted to spot. Strange in that I was talking to him the entire time and it never dawned on me that the wires in the big mans ears would prevent him from hearing me. Good thing was no one got hurt, and he didn't turn around and pop me... Stupid is as stupid does I guess.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the primer on notation. You are making me feel old. The way I was notating (is that a word?) was the way we used to do it. I promise, last referrence to the "old days." When you guys noted I could never understand if you meant 3 sets of 5 or 5 of 3, so, as usual I was clueless. So I thank you and will gladly use "standard notation."
Finally, we don't have a scale in our home. I looked at the scale in the locker room, and decided that discretion was the better part of valor and did not weigh myself. If I had to guess, conservatively I would say around 240. I put alot of "bad" weight on when I left grounds and went to nights - extremely sedentary. I'm honestly surprised I didn't break something Monday. My wife joked that it was good that I was lifting on campus as "medical is just down the street.."
