This is Max here. I got into weight training several years ago as a means of improving my baseball skills (I play for MIT). This is still sort of the goal, but I have become more interested in lifting as its own sport, and not only a means of training for other sports. I've specifically become interested in the classic olympic lifts. I don't see myself competing anytime soon, but I definitely want to improve those.
Also, I'm racing Q to dunk a full sized basketball.
I suppose I can post my first workout here too:
Bench: 3 sets of 5 @195
Barbell row: 3 sets of 5@175
had some extra time so I thought I'd practice...
Power clean + front squat: 3 x (3+3)
Power snatch + overhead squat: 3 x (3+3)
If anyone has any guidance, especially for the clean and the snatch, I'm more than willing to hear it. I look forward to meeting everyone in the near future.

Hi Max. I'lb be happy to show you what I know about Olympic lifts. How would I recognize you?
ReplyDeleteI'm about 5'10, kinda skinny (only for now!), and when I'm at the Z center I do cleans/front squats nearly every time. If anyone has ever bugged you about finding the "spinny bar", then that was probably me. I don't know what your schedule is like, but I'll be there today around 5 pm wearing an MIT baseball shirt.
ReplyDeleteWelcome! I usually come in a little later, ~7PM on Wednesday and Friday. I don't come in Sundays for now because I train at another gym, but I'll start coming, probably early afternoon, starting mid-December-ish.
ReplyDeleteAs for tips on Oly training, you could start with Dan John's writings (his ebook: http://danjohn.net/from-the-ground-up-free-ebook/ is where I learned a lot of good cues). Other than that, it's really just watching a lot of videos, having some body awareness, and getting good feedback. I'll try to help out if I'm around.
