This is super super fucked up. Like, that is unkosher. I don't see how that's possible without severely damaging a bone or tendon. Unfortunately it is your middle finger which provides lots of gripping force. The good news is, the only exercise which requires holding a lot of weight with fingers is deadlift. On bench, weight is on palms/thumbs, and squat obviously back. So you can possibly continue those.
Good idea with the wrist wraps. I went to the DR yesterday and they did xrays. Said it's not broken and it's set correctly, which is great.
However they said cause it was on a 45 degree angle and since nothing broke, something likely had to give. Also I have no mobility at all. They are worried i could have ligament damage. I have an appointment with an orthopedic guy next week.
They did say there's a chance the swelling will go down and that I will just get my mobility back. Hoping for this scenario.
There's no way I could squat yet, even with palms on the bar. Even the slightest movement is excruciating. Might be a while till I get back :(
Still, the minimal grip needed for squat especially, and possibly bench, may allow you to splint the finger so that is immobile, while gripping the bar lightly with the rest of your fingers. I mean I've seen vids of guys squatting with no hands on the bar. Not saying you should, but my point is that 4 fingers may be enough to get you through that exercise. And if the bad finger is splinted it won't move and you shouldn't be in pain. Also agree with Nate, you freakin hipster

ReplyDeleteThat's really gross. My fingers throb in empathy. Lifting advice-wise, I agree with Jon, and you can also just use straps for deadlift for a while.

God is punishing you for playing ultimate frisbee.
