Frank (4/10): Starting Strength, Heavy

I felt OK coming into the gym today, but the actual session was terrible.

Back Squat
5x45, 5x135, 5x225, 5x275
5x315 @ 10
5x315 @ 10
5x315 @ 10
Oof. The second set was the worst of the lot, but none were good. There was some pausing and good-morning-ing on all sets.

Bench Press
5x45, 5x135, 5x185
5x235 @ 10
5x225 @ 10
5x225 @ 10
Shanker thought I was going to fail the first set. Not so, sucker. Still, there's no way I would have gotten any more sets at that weight, so moved down a notch.

Deadlift
5x135, 5x225, 5x315, 5x365, 5x405
5x455 @ 10
Fx455
Oy, it's been a long time since I've failed a deadlift. The weight honestly just felt too heavy.

Comeback Plan
I weighed myself after my workout and was 175lbs with shoes and crap in my pockets (wallet, phone, keys, etc.). Assuming that weighs 2-3lbs, which compensates for the 2-3lbs of water I usually lose during a session, that means I've lost 5lbs of mostly lean mass (I don't have much fat to lose). Crap.

I'm going to use simple linear progression on all of my lifts (including deadlift) in addition to getting enough to eat and sleep, which hasn't happened over the last week or so. I think that once my diet and training schedule fall back in line, my lifts should return to where they were. If things don't improve in a week or two, then I'll have to rethink my plan.

  1. You were just sick. Eat normally and wait a week, the weight will come back. Its probably just lingering dehydration or something.

  2. Unlike Nate, I think that this is not some ordinary sickness, and that your are doomed to be weak forever. Or just for the next couple of weeks, whatever comes first.

  3. Hah guys =). Yeah, I don't think it's actually possible to lose this much true strength in two weeks. It still sucks though.
