07/05 Shanker 5 Sets Method Upper 1

@ TPS again. Again smallest guy in gym...awesome.
Went via public transportation and own feet. It was a bitch, primarily because in my infinite wisdom I wore one of my black hoodies. High in the 80's, walking along route 16 = miserable. Also had to pee like a racehorse the entire time thanks to drinking nearly 2 gallons of water enroute, in gym and on walk back.

Murph seems to think my leg drive dies in my hips. I don't remember consciously keeping my hips and glutes tight, but at this point my bench form (flaws and all) is 2nd nature, so I can't exactly pinpoint the troubled spot. But leg drive has been a problem ever since I switched to benching with my heels down.

DB Rows
Apparently TPS doesn't have a dumbbell handle, and dumbbells only go up to 130...so 130 it was today.

  1. What was the suggested solution to leg drive "dying in the hip" (not sure what this means)? The two extreme set-ups are:
    (1) Legs far behind with toes on the floor. This gives more arch, but less leg drive.
    (2) Legs in front with feet on the floor. Less of an arch, but more leg drive.

My suggestion is to switch to (2) for a while and see how it works. In the past, you may have confused overall body tension with leg drive when using setup (1). The problem with the latter is that it's illegal in most relevant competitions.

  2. the suggestion was to "come to saturday's training day."
As you know I used to do 1) and had some success with it, before switching to a far more standard form of 2) for the AAU meet, let's see what happens by the end of this cycle (only 3 weeks away), then reassess.
