wanted to post these so Danny can see them before he goes on vacation. I'll do a blow by blow and post videos later.
Squat
1) 325 (3 reds) let's call it nerves and overanxious spotters.
2) 325 (3 whites) easy
3) 347.5 (3 whites) 2.5 lb pr, whoohoo. easy
Bench
1) 220 (3 whites) easy
2) 231 (3 whites) smooth
3) 248 (3 reds) probably too ambitious of a jump.
Deadlift
1) 455 (3 whites)
2) 475 (3 reds) this thing shot off the floor but I lost in front of me, no clue how or why. Had I gotten this as easily as it appeared, would've attempted 500, but alas.
3) 485 (3 whites) 10 lb PR. smooth, pretty fast, had more in the tank, but I couldn't jump up much higher than this after #2.
Not that it means anything, but thanks to AAU losing all previous records, I now own every single full meet PL record for Juniors in 181 in Mass. and New England. Sweet.
Also, was the only junior. So I got first. Huzzah.
Anyway, clearly this whole thing leaves me wanting more, which I guess is what you want from a first meet.
And thanks to everyone, particularly Perry for patiently recording every single attempt made by an MIT lifter (and for eating the most donuts) and Eric/Nate for being the liftoff person for all of us and a few others on bench.

We will probably talk more on google chat, but anyway -- congratulations on the very successful meet (with PRs in squats and deadlifts). What seems to be particularly impressive are the wise decisions in weight selection (or was it coach Nate?). It's difficult to find the fine line between "better safe than sorry" and "no guts no glory". Overall, this total exceeds my prediction from 5-6 weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteLook me up later this week and let me know what the plan is.
Shanker had a great meet, but I think he suffered from nerves. None of his third attempts looked hard at all, and his failed lifts (except for the bench) were all because he lost focus. I was particularly puzzled by his 475 deadlift, since it really went up quickly before he basically dropped the bar from above his knees. I think experience will temper this.
ReplyDeleteI had nothing to do with any attempt selections this meet except for Shanker's 3rd dead (told him to go for a PR) and trying to get Gordon to go for a PR on his last dead.
ReplyDelete@Frank/Shanker: Did they use a deadlift bar (longer than olympic bar and with more flexibility)? It can create weird failures for some lifters, who are used to more rigid bars.
ReplyDelete@Nate: The "(or was it coach Nate?)" is an internal joke. In the long forgotten past, Shanker was known to make unwise decisions in training.
Ha, OK Danny. It didn't look like a deadlift bar to me. I think they used the same bar for all 3 lifts.
